Frequently Asked Questions: What is the program for non-religious funerals?

As an officiant in Montreal, Quebec, I often get asked what the program is for a non-religious funeral. The program is quite flexible, but we tend to start with music followed by opening words welcoming all the guests and participants.  The goal of the opening words is to put people at ease and acknowledge the deceased.

As an officiant, the next step is to say some words about the person who is departed. These words are to acknowledge the impact that the person had on those around them.  They usually focus on generalities about the person, mention of key loved ones attending the service and some of the accomplishments they achieved during their lifetimes.

After the officiant speaks of the deceased, the family and friends usually choose to play some music and songs that hold meaning for them and the person who passed on.  After this, individuals are asked to step forward to give eulogies and honor the deceased.

Some families will choose to sing, play music, show pictures, read poems and have everyone speak of a story or memory about the person. This is a good time to incorporate various traditions and rituals that may have been or are important to the person.

As a Montreal, Quebec based officiant, it is my mission to make the ceremony as personalized and meaningful as possible. If you would like to book a ceremony with me, you can email me at celebrationscoeuracoeur@gmail.com or call 438-371-9738
