Frequently asked questions: What is said at a non-religious funeral?
As an officiant in Montreal, Quebec, I often get approached for non-religious funerals. Religious funerals are generally focused on the religious beliefs and traditions of the deceases. The central focus during a memorial service or non-religious funeral, is the person who is departed.
During the ceremony, people are asked to give eulogies and to tell stories about the person. As an officiant during these ceremonies, it is my role to keep an order to the ceremony, say words of solace that are based on the beliefs of the person who passed on and their family members. Poems and specific songs can be chosen to celebrate the life that was lived by the person and the impact they had on the people around them.
Are there specific traditions or rituals that we are obligated to do during a memorial service?
This is an important question. Unlike a wedding which is very structured, funerals and memorial services are quite flexible. If there is a tradition or ritual you would like to include, then that can easily be put into the program. It is important that family and friends are able to say their goodbyes and grieve in a way that is positive and healthy.
