Frequently Asked Questions: What is a Celebration of Birth Like?

As an officiant in Montreal, Quebec, I often get asked what a Celebration of Birth is like.  My answer is always the same.  My mission is to make sure that the ceremony is tailored to the family who has approached me.  If they come from different religions and want to incorporate any specific traditions or rituals in the ceremony, then I make sure to include those aspects.

Similar to a wedding ceremony, I start off by welcoming all the guests and personalize the ceremony according to the characteristics of the parents, family and friends.  This is usually followed by music, words of welcome to the child, promises to help guide the child from the parents.  We often follow by a naming ceremony and then follow with any other traditions or rituals that the family would like included.

Do you need godparents?

Many religions have godparents or something similar.  During a non-religious celebration of birth, you don’t need godparents.  In the past, godparents are the people who would have helped guide the religious practices of the child and/or taken the child in should something happen to the parents.  Times have changed, the government follows a will and not who the godparents of the child are.

Some couples do choose two people who will make a promise to help guide the children grow to be strong, successful, and happy individuals.

As an officiant in Montreal, Quebec, I have great joy in celebrating the birth of a child with families and their friends. If you would like to book your celebration with me, email me at celebrationscoeuracoeur@gmail.comor call me at 438-371-9738.
