Frequently Asked Questions: What does an officiant need to marry me?
As an officiant in Montreal, Quebec, I often get asked what is needed in order for the couple to get married.
Before the wedding:
We need to get all your paperwork in order which means that you will need a piece of such as a license, passport, birth certificate or medicare card or a divorce certificate. For the process to be legal and in accordance with the law, all official documents must be in French or translated to French using the official translators designated by the province of Quebec.
We will need to publish your intent to marry for a minimum of twenty days before your wedding and you will need to choose two witnesses. These witnesses will also need to provide identification for legal reasons.
On the day of the wedding:
The day of the wedding can be stressful, so we want to make the day as smooth and comfortable as possible. You will need a table high enough for the soon to be newlyweds and witnesses to sign the marriage certificate. This table should be high enough that should there be a bride with a complicated dress, they won’t have to maneuver a chair or a stool to sit down. The signing should be done in blue ink to avoid any potential issues with the government.
To get married:
You will need lots of love and joy. For a ceremony to be memorable, we need to fill it with love and joy. These memories will last a lifetime!
