Wedding Officiant - Frequently Asked Questions: Can Anyone Get Married?
As a wedding officiant in Montreal Quebec, I often get asked if anyone can get married. By law, if you are over the age of 18 and aren’t married so either never married or divorced, you can get married. But, not every person or institution will marry all individuals.
Inter-faith marriages:
Many (not all) religious institutions will marry an inter-faith couple, nor do many of these couples choose that root. The benefit of working with a wedding officiant who works through the Ministre de Culte in the province of Quebec, is that they can incorporate traditions from both of the faiths into the wedding ceremony to make it extra special for those getting married.
LGBTQIA+ weddings:
As a wedding officiant in the Montreal, Quebec region, I firmly believe that love is love. As long as everyone is consenting, of consenting age, I am happy to marry them and help them celebrate their special day. Some institutions and officiants may be opposed to marrying LGBTQIA+ individuals, but it is important to note that many officiants like me do so to be able to celebrate love, no matter the form it comes in.
Can a minor get married in Quebec?:
In Quebec, a minor can get married at the age of 16 or 17, however, it is important to note that a judge in the superior court must approve of the marriage. In some areas in Canada, a parent consenting is enough to allow the wedding to proceed. A wedding officiant in Quebec will have to allow the court process to proceed before they are able to commit to marrying a couple who is underage.
